CABARET AND BEYOND
Composers, lyricists and book writers often work in isolation, locally, which leads to a lack of momentum in growing an appreciation for new works in the genre. By creating a dedicated festival to engage in nurturing and supporting skills development, as well as showcasing exceptional quality work, CABARET AND BEYOND (CAB) will be launched by the Centre for Creative Arts at the Artfluence Human Rights Festival to both grow and serve its audience by developing an annual event aimed at bringing together musical theatre creatives from across South Africa. CAB will promote, develop and commission new composition and writing within the broad spectrum of musical theatre, cabaret, and music-related storytelling to champion new South African work to empower writers and provide the opportunity to showcase material; while at the same time engaging in audience development and developing authentic South African narratives. The project is inspired by the Stories 2020 extract showcased at the Artfluence Human Rights Festival opening. The launch will unveil the processes of how CAB will be developed and its inaugural theme, Cross-Wired.
