MJ Mngadi

‘Matthew’, pseudonym for Matthews Jabulani Mngadi, was born in 1949 in Pietermaritzburg. He grew up in Durban where his mother was a housemaid and his father was a policeman at the Native Commissioner’s office. His first employer was the Consolidated Textile Mills. He was then employed by the Commissioner in Durban. He has since worked in several Government offices. While employed at the Commissioner’s office as an interpreter/ clerk, Mngadi spent his spare time reading books and learning authorship and  freelance journalism. Mngadi is a recipient of the SALA (S.A.) Lifetime Achievement Award in 2009 for lifelong dedication to African and world literary excellence. He has the following qualifications: Certificate in Development Management (University of KwaZulu-Natal School of Public Policy); National Diploma in Municipal Administration (Unisa); and BTech in Public Management (Unisa). Mngadi retired from public service in 2013. He is married to Dolly Albertina, nee Dlamini, and they have seven children.
