Given Mukwevho

Tshifhiwa Given Mukwevho was born in 1984 in Madombidzha village, Limpopo, and grew up in the streets of Makhado town, in reformatory school and maximum security prisons. His crimes were breaking into and stealing from shops in his home town during his early teenage years. Mukwevho was released from prison on 11 November 2010, after spending almost 11 years in jail, and released his first publication in 2011, a collection of short stories titled A Traumatic Revengepublished by Timbila Publishing. Mukwevho remains a writer, poet and freelance journalist and has also authored a novel, The Violent Gestures of Life (UKZN Press, 2014). He writes mobi-stories for the FunDza Literacy Trust. His Tshivenda drama manuscript, Nwananga Nandi! was announced runner-up in the Maskew Miller Longman Literature Awards 2014, where he walked away with a certificate and cash prize. This ex-offender continues to establish himself as a powerful persona in society, and a motivating force among the youth, proving that through good work there is life after prison and that the youth do not belong there. He is currently working on a novel and a collection of short stories.
