vusi-mahlasela-south-africaVusi Mahlasela was born in Pretoria in 1965,  grew up in Mamelodi, a 'township' famed as a cradle of culture which has produced many of South Africa's greatest musicians and writers. In his teens as a budding composer and writer, Vusi was part of the black consciousness poetry group, 'Ancestors of Africa', who were continually hassled by the security police. In 1988 Vusi joined the Congress of South African Writers where he was greatly influenced by artists and poets such as Lesego Rampolokeng and executed Chilean singer and poet, Victor Jara. Nadine Gordimer, who describes Vusi as "a national treasure", helped him purchase his first real guitar and he has since carved a successful musical career, performing all over the world.

Vusi has appeared or worked with many notable international artists such as Joan Armatrading, George Benson, Kenny G, Ali Farka Toure, Ismael Lo, Sting, Randy Crawford and Dave Matthews and others. His Silang Mabele album scooped both Best African Pop and Best Male Solo awards at the 1998 FNB SAMA event. Humble and approachable, Vusi Mahlasela nurtures a sincere and intense desire to be a part of the rebuilding of our nation, a theme expressively evident in his words and music. He supports various charities and has recently launched the Mahlasela Music Development Academy to help promote and develop the next generation of Mamelodi's musical talent. Vusi combines an inspired poetic consciousness with his haunting octave-spanning voice, to produce music filled with forgiveness, love and positivity that symbolises all that is good in the emerging South Africa
