Lex LaFoy , formally known as Lexikon and Queen Shalabeama, is a pop-rap recording-artist, performer and poet originally from Durban, currently based in Johannesburg.
Hailing from an underground hiphop background, LaFoy first began her exploration into the performing arts at the age of 17 as a poet under the moniker Lexikon.
Following her appearance in Poetry Africa for the first time in 2005, she went on to perform at a number of private and government events alongside Mlilo (Talking Drums) and later Talking Drums as a live Poetry and Percussion set, participating in arts events such as Drum Beat Africa and Red Eye Extravaganza. As a solo artist, LaFoy was active in poetry circles at universities and schools. She facilitated a number of poetry workshops in and around the Durban region, sharing her passion for utilising poetry and the arts as a means of self-discovery, both for herself and learners.
As a rapper, LaFoy has performed across the divide from Hype Magazine Sessions toBack to the City. In February 2013, she signed a publishing agreement with Renaissance-Rock Records (Sony/
Atv) which saw her expanding her form of artistry into what is now a combination of pop, electro and boombap.
LaFoy released her first recorded project titled Sketches in the Mind (as Lexikon) at the end of 2011, which was nominated for Best Female and Best Mixtape at the first South African Hip Hop Awards (SAHHAs) in 2012. She is currently working on the release of her debut EP as Lex LaFoy titled Paperwork, with the first single already receiving massive airplay on Yfm.
