Lwazi Xaba, who is better known as Zorro around Durban, is a versatile Durban-based poet whose captivating and musical poetry carries a positive message but also does not shy away from pointing out falsity. Zorro, who comes from a strong background in theatre, poetry, and creative writing, has over the years conceptualised numerous successful artistic and development programmes.
He is a founding member of the well-known Durban poetry collective Nowadayz Poets, which, for years, has been a magnet for the city's up and coming poets. Zorro, who has performed his poetry at countless events in recent years, began his involvement in the arts five years ago at the Stable Theatre, where he was part of the cast of the production of Kwabulawayo – the story of King Shaka Zulu. Since then Zorro has worked on numerous productions and projects. He was involved in Playhouse-staged production, Nomkhubulane and has also has also travelled with storytelling projects to schools in areas like Wentworth, Umlazi, Cato Manor and KwaMashu as well as the inner city. Other projects include: the Castle Tavern Tours, the Ethekweni Municipality's Arbour Day campaign, Poetry Africa and the Jomba Dance Festival.
Zorro has also conducted a program for street kids funded by the Department of Arts and Culture, which ran for two years – and for which he was awarded a certificate of excellence. He has also recently started the popular poetry evenings at the Zulu Jazz Lounge, which served as a performance platform for poets and which was also fused with live music. He comments: “I want to give birth to change – for the good.”
